Manchester United and Liverpool played their twenty-first Premier League game for the 2016/17 season on 15 January, and the derby ended 1-1 with Jose Mourinho’s men keeping their sixth position.
Liverpool (#3) is currently trailing league leaders Chelsea with 7 points in the league table.
The Reds and Tottenham Hotspur (#2) have 45 points each, followed by Arsenal (#4) and Manchester City (#5).
Notwithstanding the rapid flow of emotions at Old Trafford during last night’s game, Jose Mourinho and his counterpart Jurgen Klopp believe it was an impressive match.
The encounter ended with both coaches engaging in a war of words following an alleged attack on Ander Herrera from a Liverpool player Roberto Firmino.
“Very exciting, even for the non neutral – for Liverpool fans and our fans they were enthusiastic until the last seconds,” Mourinho told BBC Sports after the game.
“I didn’t think the game had super quality.
“We were the team that attacked and Liverpool were the team that defended.
“Let’s see if the critics are fair. I enjoyed it but I will obviously be disappointed we didn’t get the three points.”
The German coach Jurgen Klopp says Man U played well but adds that Liverpool should have won although Jose’s men were favored by critics.
Klopp said: “A lot of people before the game would have thought we would get a knock today because United look like a rolling beetle and everything goes in their direction.
“It is so intense. They play long balls, it was a wild game. There was a lot of action in the last few minutes.
“We were here to win the game which is why we we are not 100% satisfied,” he added.
In the build-up to Man U’s game against visitors, Liverpool, Ste Hoare [a famous football analyst] granted an interview to Read Sport.
Hoare said the Premier League is the world’s best football competition because “even when one of the two teams is struggling, everyone is talking about this game.
“The fact (that) both sides – Liverpool and Manchester United – are doing pretty well this year only heightens its significance further.
“There are plenty of big games in the Premier League but this is the biggest.”
“[On which team bought a better player during last year’s summer transfer window] Tough one. United went and splashed the cash and got some excellent players. Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp did things slightly differently. He did spend a bit on money but chose to do so on younger players who he felt he could develop.
“Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sadio Mane were the two most important buys I feel, but I honestly couldn’t say which side did better business.”
Hoare talked about Coutinho, who he says is an extraordinary player.
However, the football analyst recommended that Liverpool should buy another pacy winger instead of relying too much on Sadio Mane.
According to Hoare, the Reds were supposed to win 2-1 against Man U.
