Renters’ Rights Act: Millions of UK tenants to get letters from landlords about new rights

Millions of tenants across England will receive a letter from their landlord explaining their new rights.

Around 11 million renters will benefit from stronger protections under the Renters’ Rights Act from the start of May.

This includes the scrapping of Section 21 evictions, better rights to request pets, protections against rent increases and fixed-term tenancies.

“The Renters’ Rights Act is a major step towards re-balancing power between renters and landlords, giving us greater security in our homes,” Ben Twomey, chief executive of Generation Rent, said.

“Ahead of the new law coming into action, it’s vital renters take the time to understand what these new rights are and how to respond if landlords break the rules.”

You could receive a hard copy of the information in the post, or it could be attached as a PDF to an email.

Landlords and their letting agents are legally required to provide it to you by 31 May, or they could face a fine.

According to the government website, the document is designed to give you “helpful and practical” advice on each of the changes and what it means for your tenancy agreement.
