Ukrainian strikes also knock out electricity in Russian border region

As Russian attacks knock out power to thousands in Ukraine, a Russian official has also reported power cuts following Ukrainian attacks in a border region.

Belgorod governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said almost half a million people were left without electricity in the region after Ukrainian strikes hit energy infrastructure.

Many residents also faced disruption to heating and water supply, he said.

Gladkov said repair works will take several days to complete.

Belgorod, which lies around 40 km (25 miles) from the Ukrainian border, has been a frequent target of Ukrainian drone and missile strikes during the conflict.

One killed and 13 injured in Russian region after Ukrainian drone attack, governor says

One person has been killed in the Russian region of Kursk and 13 others injured after a Ukrainian drone attack, according to the local governor.

Alexander Khinshtein, in a statement on Telegram, said two strikes had taken place, the first killing a 55-year-old agricultural worker, and the second injuring people.

He added:

“There is no forgiveness, and there can be no forgiveness, for these inhumane attacks!”

Kursk is in western Russia, bordering northern Ukraine.

Trump says he thinks Putin and Zelenskyy ‘getting close’ to a deal – but admits he’s ‘been saying that for a while’

Donald Trump was swearing in his new secretary of homeland security in the White House a few moments ago.

When taking questions, the US president was asked about long-running diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

He said he thought Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy were “getting close” to a deal, but admitted he had “been saying that for a while”.

Kyiv had a delegation in Florida this weekend, meeting with Trump’s team.

Here’s what the US leader said:

“I think they’re getting close. But I’ve been saying that for a while…. these are two people that truly hate each other. You’ll find out that hatred is not good for making deals. These are people that they don’t like each other very much.”

Zelenskyy: ‘Today’s attacks show Russia has no intention of ending this war’

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian leader, in his regular nightly address, has spoken about the daytime attacks Russia carried out across his country.

He said:

“Today, practically all day and night, Russia is hitting Ukraine with ‘shaheeds’. There was a massive strike at night: both missiles and ‘shaheeds’. All day long – new waves of drones.”

Shaheed drones are Iranian-designed drones that explode on impact – Moscow has used them repeatedly during its invasion.

Zelenskyy added:

“The scale of this attack clearly shows that Russia has no intention of really ending this war. And if we take into account that Russia is also helping the Iranian regime strike throughout the region, the conclusion is quite obvious: without additional and strong pressure on Russia, without tangible Russian losses, they there, in Moscow, will not have the desire to move away from the war, to somehow get used to peace again.”
