A review into how police assess risk will be held in the wake of a decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending a football match in Birmingham.
Policing minister Sarah Jones MP said the review would be carried out by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
It comes after fans of the Israeli side were told they would not be able to attend a Europa League game against Aston Villa in November. Aston Villa went on to win the game 2-0.
The decision to ban away supporters was made by a local safety board, comprising police, council officials and other local emergency services, because of safety concerns.
Jones was responding to an urgent question in the Commons, in which she was asked her to address what intelligence was used by police in coming to the decision.
She said the decision was a “sensitive matter” and that she was “limited in what I can say about specific intelligence”, but that the government had been “clear there is no place for hatred or discrimination”.
