Trading in old Ikea furniture could earn you a gift card

If you’re thinking of changing up your Ikea furniture but don’t want to pay the full amount for new items, keep reading.

The Swedish retailer’s “buyback” scheme allows customers to return an item in exchange for a gift card with up to 45% of the original price, based on its condition.

The scheme is available for some products, but not everything. Dressers, bookcases, cabinets and tables are among the items included, but you can’t return others, such as beds, mattresses, sofas and items used outside (see the full list here).

How much can I get?

Ikea offers the following amounts for eligible items:

As new – no scratches: 45% of the original price (+15% for those signed up to the Ikea Family membership scheme)

Very good – minor scratches: 35% of original price (+15% for Ikea Family members)

Well-used – several scratches: 25% of original price (+15% for Ikea Family members)

Second-hand items will be resold in store or online, Ikea says.

Returned items must be complete, assembled and fully functional, and in a clean, unmodified and good, resalable condition.

Customers are asked to complete the buyback estimator tool before heading to a participating store, where the items will be inspected by Ikea staff.
