The prime minister has paid tribute to the “incredible example” set by his mum, as he marks Mother’s Day today.
Writing on social media, Sir Keir Starmer said: “My mum was an incredible example for me. Even through long years of illness, she always put others first.
“Thinking of you today, mum.
“Happy Mother’s Day.”
Starmer’s mum lived with Still’s Disease, which attacks the immune system and causes painful swelling in the joints.
She spent a long time in hospital high-dependency wards.
Josephine Starmer died in 2015, a few weeks before her son was first elected as an MP.
In 2024, Keir Starmer told the High Performance Podcast: “She had this amazing courage and determination. She would never moan… and she would always get back up, somehow, she’d get back up, get back to her feet in the most impossible circumstances.”
