Janet Jackson Announces ‘Control 40’ Film, Taped at December Florida Show

Janet Jackson is releasing a film celebrating the 40th anniversary of her landmark 1986 album Control. Titled Janet Jackson: Control 40, the documentary will capture the 60-year-old music legend performing the collection in full from Amerant Bank Arena in Florida, with the recording set for December 12 using multiple cameras.

“It will be a whole new show – new costumes, new stage and maybe a little glimpse into the making of the album,” Jackson said. “It’s going to be filmed for a movie, which means that our time together will be remembered for decades.” The performance will also feature songs from across Jackson’s back catalogue.

Control became her first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the US, and it produced an extraordinary run of hits. Five of its singles – “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “When I Think of You,” “Control” and “Let’s Wait Awhile” – all climbed into the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first woman to score five top-five singles from one album. “When I Think of You” gave her her first Hot 100 chart-topper, and the era generated a continuous 65-week stretch of charting singles on the Hot 100.

News of the film comes after Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson – who stars as Michael Jackson in an upcoming biopic – claimed his aunt has her own biopic in the works. The “That’s The Way Love Goes” hitmaker declined to be involved in the film about her late brother, who died in 2009. Jaafar told GQ Middle East that Janet “has ideas of maybe doing her own film,” adding that having someone portrayed in the Michael biopic and then choosing a different actor for her own project would be complicated. Jaafar also reflected on how emotional his family was when they saw an early screening of footage from Michael, describing “some sniffles, a few cousins getting emotional” and a wave of hugs and support afterward. Sister LaToya Jackson, 69, previously explained that Janet had “kindly declined” to be involved with director Antoine Fuqua’s movie.
