If you grew up in the early 2000s, the Shrek franchise probably holds a special place in your childhood (or teenage) memories. That grumpy but big-hearted green ogre, his annoyingly loyal Donkey, and the fiercely capable Princess Fiona turned fairy-tale tropes upside down—and warmed millions of hearts in the process.

Now, after an agonizing wait, Shrek 5 is officially on its way.

Release Date: A Bumpy Road to Theaters

The path to Shrek 5 hasn’t been smooth. The film was initially slated for July 1, 2026, then pushed to December 23, 2026 to align with DreamWorks Animation’s 25th‑anniversary celebrations. That date didn’t stick either—the movie has now been rescheduled again, with the current confirmed release set for June 30, 2027.

That means a gap of 17 years since Shrek Forever After hit screens in 2010. It’s a long wait for fans, but the good news is—the first trailer has already arrived.

Cast: Old Friends Return, New Blood Joins

The Core Trio Is Back

Most reassuring of all: all three lead voice actors are returning:

  • Mike Myers – Shrek
  • Eddie Murphy – Donkey
  • Cameron Diaz – Princess Fiona

Eddie Murphy confirmed the project as early as June 2024, saying: *”We started doing *Shrek 4* or Shrek 5 months ago. I’ve recorded the first act, and we’ll finish it this year.”* He even hinted at a possible Donkey spin‑off movie—great news for fans of the talkative equine.

Fresh Faces

One of the biggest surprises is Zendaya joining the cast—she’ll voice Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s daughter.

Additionally, SNL comedian Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo have been cast as Shrek and Fiona’s two sons—Fergus and Farkle, respectively.

One Big Question Mark

It’s still unclear whether Antonio Banderas will return as Puss in Boots. Given the success of the Puss in Boots spin‑offs (especially 2022’s The Last Wish, which was both a critical and commercial hit), fans are eagerly hoping the furry feline will also make an appearance in Shrek 5.

Behind the Scenes: Veteran Leadership

Shrek 5 is co‑directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon—both longtime Shrek veterans. Dohrn served as writer and artist on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, story supervisor on Shrek Forever After, and voiced the villain Rumpelstiltskin. Brad Ableson joins as co‑director.

On the producing side, franchise stalwart Gina Shay returns, alongside Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri—a notable addition given Meledandri’s track record with animated hits. The script is penned by Michael McCullers.

Plot: What the Trailer Reveals

Official plot details remain under wraps, but the first teaser trailer—released on June 16—offers some enticing clues.

The trailer opens with a storybook‑style narration recapping the original 2001 Shrek. Donkey then interrupts, excitedly announcing a new adventure—which he describes as a “whirlwind city adventure.”

The gang returns to the magical kingdom of “Far Far Away” and encounters all sorts of oddities—including a creepy snowman parodying Olaf from Frozen, who ominously asks: “Wanna date a snowman?” Gingerbread Man also makes a comeback, adding his own “flourish”—he sticks two gumdrop buttons on his backside, declaring himself “bakery fresh.”

The trailer ends with a fun twist: Shrek, Fiona, their kids, and Donkey are all thrown in jail. Trapped in a cell, Donkey starts humming “Baby Come Back” and “Roxanne”, much to Shrek’s annoyance.

Interestingly, Zendaya’s character Felicia does not appear in the trailer—though her name is shown in the end title card. This has sparked fan speculation: is her role being saved for later marketing, or does she hold a more mysterious place in the story?

Controversy: The New Animation Style Sparks Debate

Not all reactions to the trailer have been positive. The new animation style has become a major talking point—and not everyone is thrilled. Many fans voiced dissatisfaction, with some comments bluntly saying “we want the old Shrek back.”

Given that 17 years have passed since the last film, technological advances and stylistic evolution are almost inevitable. But balancing innovation with the nostalgic look that fans adore is clearly a challenge Shrek 5 will have to navigate.

Franchise Legacy: A Box‑Office Giant

The Shrek franchise’s impact is undeniable. The four main films grossed over $2.9 billion worldwide. Add the two Puss in Boots spin‑offs, and the six‑film series has collectively earned more than $1.6 billion. And let’s not forget—the original 2001 Shrek was the first film ever to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth the Hype?

A 17‑year gap is a long time, but the return of the original voice cast, the injection of fresh talent, and the familiar brand of irreverent “Shrek‑style” humour seen in the trailer all point to a promising comeback.

That said, the controversy over the new animation style reminds us that nostalgia is a double‑edged sword. Fans are attached to the ogre who grew up with them, and the biggest test for Shrek 5 will be preserving that classic spirit while bringing something new to the table.

Whatever the outcome, June 30, 2027 is already marked on calendars worldwide. The swamp’s favourite resident will soon be back on the big screen.
