Zayn Malik: Signing up for One Direction was a mistake

Zayn Malik, the former One Direction singer, has revealed he wouldn’t sign up for the music group if he had a chance to be 17 again. He was discovered as a talent after auditioning for the British reality television music competition The X Factor.

After his elimination as a solo performer, those who believed in his singing abilities brought him back into the competition as a group made up of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson.

Notwithstanding the fame, fortune and a supermodel girlfriend he found as a successful musician with the band, Malik says he would have told his 17-year-ols self: “Don’t do it”.

The 23-year-old star missed several live shows after suffering stress and anxiety, especially in his last months with the music group which he left in 2015.

In his recent interview with BBC, Malik said: “When I look back at images of myself from around November 2014, before the final tour, I can see how ill I was.

“Something I’ve never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder.”

“It wasn’t as though I had any concerns about my weight or anything like that. I’d just go for days—sometimes two or three days straight—without eating anything at all,” the British pop star confessed. “It got quite serious, although at the time I didn’t recognize it for what it was.”

He continues: “I didn’t feel like I had control over anything else in my life, but food was something I could control, so I did [try].

“I had lost so much weight I had become ill. The workload and the pace of life on the road put together with the pressures and strains of everything going on within the band had badly affected my eating habits,” he added.

“I realized that I wasn’t eating as much just down to the amount of work that we were doing…our schedule was kind of crazy so we were all over the place. It was just more down to losing track of, you know, actually eating and being super busy and getting caught up with other things that 17 or 18-year-olds do, which normally entails them going out, drinking or partying, so it was a mixture of everything.”

Malik, who signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco label after finishing third on X-Factor with his group, has continued to suffer anxiety.

Earlier this year, reports confirmed he contacted Adele’s manager for help following wide reports that the “Hello” singer also went through the same health issues at a point in her career.

Talking to ES Magazine, Malik revealed details of what he suffered after finding fame with One Direction. He regrets the fact that he lost his privacy, something he would have teasured forever as an “introvert”.

In his words: “I was very ignorant at 17 — blind beyond my years. I thought going on X Factor meant you won a million pounds and got a contract at the end of it.

“And I was like, ‘Shit. All my problems are solved. I win a million pounds and that’s it. Simple.’ But you don’t think about everything else that goes with it. You’re only 17, your dreams are immature.”

The singer was asked if he had any advice to offer his 17-year-old self and his response was straight to the point, “don’t do it”, he said. But that wasn’t all.

Malik added: “I would say, ‘Do your research and be a bit more prepared about certain situations before you make a decision.’'”

On whether he would have signed up with the band considering the vast knowledge in his vault right now, the singer said there’s a lot to be thankful for.

In his words: “But I probably wouldn’t have [signed] — I would’ve waited a couple more extra years. Just so I had that time to just get my head around being a famous person.

“I’ve never been able to have, what’s the word? Anonymity.

“If I could go back, I’d have a few more years of anonymity.”

Malik was shy to talk about his relationship with American model Gigi Hadid. However, the famous singer admitted that his family in Bradford taught him how to love and respect women.

“My mum brought me up as a feminist,” he claims. “Three sisters, five aunties and a mum — not a hope.”

The British pop star who left One Direction in 2015 due to a widely reported anxiety issues, has been open about it.

Talking about his time as a One Direction singer, he told BBC during the interview: “That machine was already going, it was at 100 miles per hour and it was harder to get off that machine.”

Malik added that things are much easier now. “I’m controlling this one,” the “Pillowtalk” singer said.

  1. Zayn can say it was a mistake but he is forgetting there would be no him if it wasn’t for the group. He could have been a wasted talent by now.
