Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan, who has lost her seat in the Senedd, describes today’s election results as “catastrophic”.

She says it marks the end of a century of Labour winning in Wales and calls for the party to have a long hard look at itself.

Morgan confirms she is stepping down as leader, saying:

“I’ve lost my seat here in Ceredigion Penfro and I will be standing down as leader of Welsh Labour. I take responsibility for the Labour result in Wales.”

She repeats a sentiment heard elsewhere today, that the age of two-party politics is dead, and says her party has been rejected by Wales.

Morgan doesn’t directly mention Sir Keir Starmer, but calls on UK Labour to change its course and redistribute its wealth away from the South East.

On today’s standout winner, Reform UK, she says:

“We need to heed the anger, not feed it.”

We’ve just brought you the news that Labour’s first minister has lost her seat.

Eluned Morgan had six chances to get back into the Welsh Parliament thanks to the new system, but was unable to.

Of the seats available, three went to Plaid Cymru, two to Reform UK and one to the Conservatives.

Sky’s Sam Coates described it as a “hammer blow” to Labour.

He adds:

“She was, you know, a relatively popular figure in Wales as an academic who took over after a period of turbulence in the Welsh party. To see a leader of one of the nations kicked out by the electorate, we knew it was going to be bad.”

With Labour likely to lose control of the Senedd, he points out that this is a “seismic moment” as Wales has never not had a Labour government since the inception of the Welsh Parliament in 1999.
