Gianni Infantino, the FIFA President, has summarized his feelings on the death of 75 Brazilian players and media representatives who died in a plane crash on Tuesday.
“It’s a very, very sad day for football,” Infantino said of the total 81 passengers on board the ill-fated aircraft which crashed in Columbia.
The 46-year-old who holds dual nationality, Swiss and Italian, said: “At this difficult time our thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends.
“FIFA would like to extend its most heartfelt condolences to the fans of Chapecoense, the football community and media organizations concerned in Brazil.”
Latest reports say only six passengers survived from the crash – three of them are Chapecoense players.
In total, there were 72 passengers and nine crew members, authorities said. The crash occurred in the Colombian region of Antioquia.

The aircraft conveying Brazilian Chapecoense Real football team and nine crew members was declared missing in the Columbian airspace on Tuesday, the Jose Maria Cordova International Airport in Rionegro said in a statement.
