Martin Lewis has responded after the Money blog revealed how a radio DJ’s parents who fell for a fake advert using his photograph had been scammed out of their life savings.
Absolute Radio’s Andy Bush warned of a “hidden crime epidemic” after his parents were drawn in by the advert for a so-called “investment scheme” promising returns of up to 8% on their cash.
The couple lost around £20,000 after a fraudster called “John” tricked them into making transfers into an app mimicking a cryptocurrency exchange.
In a post to X, Lewis said he was “so sorry” to hear about the situation.
“It is utterly disgraceful, and thank you for speaking out about it. Please send them my best wishes. I wish I could say this was unique or different, but sadly it’s not, its become commonplace,” Lewis wrote.
He called social media advertising the “complete Wild West” and criticised successive governments for failing to tackle the issue.
Lewis has repeatedly stressed that he does not endorse investment schemes – and has called on tech giants to do more to clamp down on scam adverts featuring his likeness.
