Ukraine denies resignation of top commander

Ukraine has denied rumours that its top military commander has resigned or been dismissed.

The Institute for the Study of War said Ukrainian people’s deputy Oleksii Honcharenko claimed yesterday that commander-in-chief General Valerii Zaluzhnyi “announced his resignation, but there is no decree yet”.

Meanwhile, former people’s deputy Boryslav Bereza claimed the Ukrainian presidential office had “dismissed” the general.

According to military analysts at the ISW, the Ukrainian defence ministry denied the rumours, saying “no, this is not true” – but did not offer further details.

The thinktank said Russian sources have “seized” on Mr Zaluzhnyi’s reported dismissal or resignation, with one veteran Russian propagandist describing the reports as “chaos” and “useful to [Russia]”.

Mr Zaluzhnyi has been serving as commander-in-chief since July 2021, but there have been several reports of disagreements between him and Volodymyr Zelenskyy in recent months.

EU leaders will pledge to continue Ukraine support at special summit

EU leaders will stress their intent to continue providing “timely, predictable and sustainable military support” to Ukraine at a special summit this week.

A draft text, seen by Reuters, says the European Council “also reiterates the urgent need to accelerate the delivery of ammunition and missiles”.

Leaders will convene on Thursday in the hopes of agreeing on the bloc’s budget and further military aid to Ukraine.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked a €50bn aid package for Kyiv at the last regular summit in December.
