Trainline will start warning customers if their railcards are not valid after several people were prosecuted for incorrectly using an “anytime day return”.
Under the small print, railcards cannot be used before 10am on fares less than £12. This means some commuters have been incorrectly buying “anytime day returns”, believing they could use them at any time of day.
Now Trainline will start warning customers when they purchase any anytime ticket if their railcard is not valid, with a new pop-up at the check out.
Northern Rail had gone as far as prosecuting those who fall foul of the rules, leaving them with fines worth hundreds of pounds over fare mistakes worth less than a couple of quid.
