Pop-up ads that appeared on websites including Asda and Domino’s Pizza, offering customers the chance to claim cashback, have been banned by the advertising watchdog.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled several adverts run by shopper reward program Webloyalty to be misleading.
The ads appeared after a customer had purchased an item, offering them cashback worth around £20.
The advert told customers to click a link “to claim the above reward, credited onto your card when you next place an order” with the retailer. The ads appeared on the websites of retailers Domino’s Pizza, Papa John’s, Moonpig, Asda and Trainline.
But, the ASA said it was not clear to customers that the pop-ups were coming from a third party, and that by clicking “continue” some people would have thought they were finishing their order with the original retailer.
Consumers may also have believed they had earned a free cashback reward, but the partner programme cost £18 a month.
