Government ‘completely confident’ football regulator won’t see England banned from Europe

One of the concerns raised about the English football regulator – in its previous form – was that it could see the Three Lions excluded from European competitions.

Culture, Media and Sports Secretary Lisa Nandy was asked if the latest iteration of the watchdog – announced today – carried the same risks.

Asked if she was confident England would not be banned, Ms Nandy says: “I am completely confident that there is absolutely no problem that the independent football regulator poses to the ability of English football to lead the world.”

She says that Labour was in discussions with UEFA, even while in opposition, and have decided to make a change to the last government’s plans.

The specific issue was that the regulator would have had to take into account UK foreign and trade policy.

Now the measure is removed, Ms Nandy says the proposed law is “more match fit”.
