Luis Rubiales is a “boy” who is “obsessed” with women and power, his uncle has told a Spanish newspaper.
Former journalist Juan Rubiales had been employed as chief of staff to the head of the Spanish FA but left in 2020 after about two years in the job.
Luis Rubiales is under increasing pressure to step down from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), after he kissed player Jenni Hermoso without her consent during World Cup celebrations.
Speaking to El Confidencial in Spain, Juan said Luis Rubiales (translated from Spanish) “is a proud, arrogant person and his great enemy is himself”.
“He has died because of his pride and because of his arrogance, and now he does not have the slightest dignity to get out of this trance in an honourable way. What he has done is making this situation worse every day,” Juan Rubiales added.
When asked what his nephew is like, Mr Rubiales said: “He is a cowardly man.
“He is a man obsessed with power, obsessed with luxury, obsessed with money, even with women. I think he is a boy… I believe that this boy needs a program of social re-education and re-education in his relationship with women.”
The interview comes after Mr Rubiales’ sister-in-law, Luis’s mother, was taken to hospital after locking herself in a church in Rubiales’ home town of Motril and going on hunger strike over the treatment of her son.
According to a priest who identified himself as Father Antonio, Angeles Bejar was taken to hospital on Wednesday after feeling stressed and tired.
There has been no confirmation from the hospital that she was admitted.
Mr Rubiales has not commented on the issue since his suspension by FIFA. His mother had said on local TV he had told her to stop the hunger strike.
The women’s team have refused to play until Mr Rubiales goes, while the team’s manager could also be forced to quit for applauding Mr Rubiales during his defiant speech last week.
Jorge Vilda later changed his stance and released a statement criticizing his actions – but did not call for him to go.
