Russia slams Armenia for joining International Criminal Court

Kremlin: Armenia joining International Criminal Court ‘wrongful’

There’s been more reaction from the Kremlin to the news that Armenia has voted to join the International Criminal Court despite a warning from Russia (see our 13.09 post).

The move has vexed Moscow, which considered Yerevan an ally.

In further comments on the situation this afternoon, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov branded Armenia’s decision “wrongful”.

“We doubted from the very beginning that, from the point of view of bilateral relations, Armenia joining the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court is correct,” he told journalists.

Countries under ICC jurisdiction are obliged to arrest Vladimir Putin if he enters their territory due to a warrant currently out for his arrest.

Mr Peskov said Russia “would not want” Mr Putin to have to refuse a visit to Armenia – but warned there will be “additional questions” for leaders in Yerevan.

Armenian officials say the decision has nothing to do with Russia.
