Putin approves ‘children of heroes’ programme for families of soldiers killed in Ukraine

Vladimir Putin has backed a new programme that aims to look after the children of those killed in the “special military operation” in Ukraine dubbed “children of heroes”, it has been announced.

Russian state news agency TASS said Mr Putin “demanded that special attention be paid to the children of special operation fighters and that they be taken care of ‘as if they were our own’”, Tass said.

The Russian president made this demand of the head of Kabardino-Balkaria Kazbek Kokov, who reportedly told the Mr Putin that the republican authorities were implementing the “children of heroes” project, which aims to monitor children of fighters through regular check-ins with socials workers.

Kremlin doubles down on claim of innocence over Baltic gas pipeline

The Kremlin has once again insisted that Russia had nothing to do with damage inflicted on a gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia, known as the Balticconnector, at the start of the month.

This comes after Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics said in an interview with LTV on Thursday that NATO should opt to close the Baltic Sea to ships if Russia were proven responsible for the damage.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said threats made towards Russia were unacceptable.

This is the latest in a series of public spats between Russia and Latvia – which we discussed further in our 9.34am post.
