Nigeria Mourns Former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad, Extends Sympathy to Government and People of Qatar

ABUJA, July 12, 2026 — The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep condolences to the Government and people of Qatar following the death of the country’s former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria described the late leader as a distinguished statesman whose leadership played a transformative role in Qatar’s political and economic development while strengthening the country’s standing on the global stage.

The government noted that Sheikh Hamad’s contributions extended beyond Qatar, highlighting his efforts to promote diplomacy, regional cooperation and international peace.

“The Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria extend heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the State of Qatar on the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Emir of Qatar.”

Nigeria also acknowledged the late Emir’s commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations with countries across the world, including Nigeria.

According to the statement, Sheikh Hamad’s vision and leadership left a lasting legacy that will continue to influence Qatar’s development for generations to come.

“His visionary leadership, commitment to national development and dedication to peace and international cooperation will remain an enduring legacy.”

The Federal Government conveyed its sympathy to the Qatari royal family and all those affected by the loss, while praying for strength and comfort during this period of mourning.

“Nigeria stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Qatar during this difficult time and prays that Almighty Allah grants the departed eternal rest and comforts his family and loved ones.”

Nigeria reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between both nations and expressed confidence that the close diplomatic ties established over the years would continue to grow despite the loss of the former monarch.

The condolence message reflects the cordial relationship between Nigeria and Qatar, with both countries maintaining cooperation in areas including diplomacy, trade, investment, energy and aviation.

Sheikh Hamad, who served as Emir of Qatar for nearly two decades, was widely recognised for overseeing a period of rapid national transformation that elevated Qatar’s influence in regional and international affairs.
