Trump Orders US Flags Lowered to Honour Late Senator Lindsey Graham

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 13, 2026 — President Donald Trump has directed that American flags across the United States be flown at half-staff in honour of longtime Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who died at the age of 71.

The presidential order came after the death of the South Carolina senator, who was one of Trump’s closest allies in Congress and a prominent voice on foreign policy, defence and national security issues.

Under the directive, flags at federal buildings, military facilities and other public institutions were lowered as a mark of respect for Graham’s decades of service to the United States. The measure will remain in effect for the period specified in the presidential proclamation.

Trump paid tribute to Graham, describing him as a dedicated public servant, loyal friend and committed American patriot.

“Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!!”

Graham represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate for more than two decades and became one of the Republican Party’s most influential lawmakers. He was particularly known for his positions on military strength, international alliances and U.S. involvement in global security matters.

The senator’s death prompted condolences from political leaders in Washington and abroad, with colleagues highlighting his impact on American politics and his role in shaping debates on foreign affairs and national defence.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and other officials also honoured Graham’s service, describing him as a determined advocate for his state and country.

Graham’s political career included service in the U.S. House of Representatives before joining the Senate in 2003. Over the years, he became a key figure in Republican politics and developed a close working relationship with Trump after initially being one of the president’s critics during the 2016 election campaign.

The senator’s passing has created a vacancy in the Senate, with authorities expected to follow established procedures to select a temporary replacement before a future election determines a permanent successor.

The lowering of the nation’s flags reflects the significance of Graham’s public service and the recognition of his influence in American political life.
