BENIN CITY, July 13, 2026 — Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has commended residents for what he described as impressive participation during the state’s local government elections, saying the turnout demonstrated citizens’ commitment to grassroots democracy.
The election was conducted across all 18 local government areas of Edo State to elect council chairmen and councillors, with the process monitored by electoral officials, security personnel, observers and journalists.
Okpebholo spoke shortly after casting his ballot at his polling unit in Udomi Primary School, Esan Central Local Government Area, where he joined other voters before exercising his civic responsibility.
The governor described the level of participation as encouraging, saying it reflected the interest of residents in selecting leaders responsible for managing affairs at the local government level.
“The turnout is very high. This is a demonstration of grassroots democracy. It shows that our people are interested in choosing those who will administer the affairs of their local governments.”
He expressed confidence that the electoral process would produce winners accepted by the people, while urging residents to remain peaceful and allow the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) to complete its responsibilities.
“By the grace of God, a winner will emerge at the end of today’s election.”
The governor also linked the public response to his administration’s activities, with supporters pointing to ongoing infrastructure projects and development initiatives as factors that encouraged citizens to participate in the exercise.
The local government election featured participation from multiple political parties, with EDSIEC overseeing the voting process across the state’s 18 council areas.
Election observers and stakeholders described the exercise as largely peaceful, with security agencies deployed to maintain order and support a smooth voting process.
The outcome of the council elections is expected to shape grassroots governance in Edo State, as newly elected local government officials prepare to assume responsibility for administration and development at the community level.
