New EU Council president visits Kyiv on first day of new job

The new European Council president and foreign policy chief are visiting Ukraine on their first day in their jobs.

President Antonio Costa, the former prime minister of Portugal, and Kaja Kallas, the bloc’s new high representative for foreign affairs and Estonia’s former leader, are in Kyiv today after being sworn in on Friday.

Both leaders tweeted pictures of themselves arriving at the capital’s train station on Sunday morning.

The EU says its institutions and member countries have contributed $133bn (£110bn) in aid to Ukraine since the war began in February 2022.

“In my first visit since taking up office, my message is clear: the European Union wants Ukraine to win this war,” Kallas wrote on X early on Sunday. “We will do whatever it takes for that.”

Three dead in Kherson drone attack

We’ve got details of further drone attacks over Ukraine this morning.

According to Kherson’s regional governor, three people were killed and seven injured in an attack on the southern city earlier today.

Russian forces withdrew from Kherson in late 2022 but have regularly attacked it with artillery and drones from the other side of the Dnipro River.

Ukraine said it shot down 32 out of 78 drones fired over the country overnight.
