LONDON, July 14, 2026 — Melanie “Mel B” Brown has opened up about the most painful moment of her time with the Spice Girls, revealing that Geri Halliwell’s sudden departure from the group remains one of her most devastating memories.
The singer, known as Scary Spice, said discovering that Halliwell, who was widely known as Ginger Spice, had decided to leave the chart-topping girl group was an emotional shock that she struggled to understand at the time.
Mel B recalled that the announcement came on May 29, 1998 — a date that was particularly memorable because it was also her birthday.
“[The worst Spice Girls moment was] finding out Geri had left us on May 29, 1998. It was my birthday.”
She explained that while she later came to understand Halliwell’s reasons for leaving, the sudden nature of the decision made the experience extremely difficult.
“We’ve all talked about it since, and I understand why, but at the time it was devastating because I just didn’t know why.”
Halliwell’s exit came during a period when the Spice Girls were at the height of their global popularity. The group had become one of the biggest music acts in the world following the success of hits such as “Wannabe” and “Spice Up Your Life,” with millions of fans following their every move.
Geri later explained that her decision to leave was influenced by creative differences, exhaustion and a desire to pursue a different direction. Her departure transformed the group from a five-member act into a quartet, with Mel B, Victoria Beckham, Melanie C and Emma Bunton continuing without her for a period before the group eventually went on hiatus.
Despite the pain surrounding the split, Mel B said the experience has become something the former bandmates have been able to discuss openly over the years.
The Spice Girls have reunited on several occasions since their original success, including a 2019 tour that featured four of the five original members. However, hopes of another full reunion featuring all five singers have remained uncertain.
Mel B has previously expressed her enthusiasm for performing with her former bandmates again, saying she would welcome another opportunity to celebrate the group’s legacy.
Beyond the challenges, she also reflected on some of the happiest memories from her Spice Girls journey, including meeting members of the British royal family and experiencing the extraordinary rise of the group from aspiring performers to international superstars.
The Spice Girls’ story remains one of the most influential chapters in pop music history, with their message of friendship, confidence and “Girl Power” continuing to resonate with fans decades after their breakthrough.
For Mel B, the departure of Geri Halliwell remains a defining moment — not only because it changed the future of the group, but because it marked one of the most emotional experiences of her career.
