Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, is speaking on the tarmac in Maryland before boarding a plane to Israel.
“The United States has Israel’s back,” he begins, adding: “We stand resolutely against terrorism.”
“Not since ISIS have we seen this kind of depravity,” he says.
“Significant [US] military assistance requested by Israel is on the way” and they anticipate more requests, Mr Blinken says.
The number of Americans killed “probably will” rise, he says.
Asked whether the US has advocated for any degree of restraint in Israel’s retaliation, he declines to comment on specifics, adding only that the US and Israel respects international law and the laws of war.
“We know that Israel will take all the precautions that it can.”
