Over the past four days, the number of antisemitic incidents recorded across the UK has risen by more than 300%, a leading Jewish charity has said. 

At least 89 incidents were noted by the Community Security Trust (CST) since Hamas launched its attack on Israel – a 324% increase on the same period last year. 

“Make no mistake: these are anti-Jewish racist incidents and hate crimes in which Jewish people, property and institutions are singled out for hate, including death threats and abuse,” it said. 

“In many cases, the perpetrators of these disgraceful incidents are using the symbols and language of pro-Palestinian politics as rhetorical weapons with which to threaten and abuse Jewish people.” 

Labour’s shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said the abuse is “truly appalling” and British Jews have the “right to feel safe and secure”. 

“There is no place in Britain for antisemitic hate,” she said. 

Four people arrested at pro-Palestine event in Manchester

Four people have been arrested on suspicion of breaching the peace at a pro-Palestine event in Manchester. 

Greater Manchester Police said the suspects were taken into custody because their actions “had the potential to cause disorder at an otherwise peaceful event”. 

“They were not arrested for supporting Palestine,” the force said. 

“GMP understands members of Greater Manchester’s communities are devastated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and that people have a right to express their support for both Israel and Palestine.”
