Drivers rescued as six cars stuck on mountain pass

Police have shared an update on the multi-vehicle incident in the Lake District we reported earlier.

Officers covering the Eden district said they were sent from Penrith to assist colleagues from Kendal after six vehicles became stuck on the icy Wrynose mountain pass.

Occupants of all the cars were rescued following the incident, which emergency services were called to shortly after 1pm on Saturday.

“We safely conveyed the occupants down the pass,” Eden Police said in a post shared on Facebook.

The Wrynose Pass and the Hardknott Pass are now both closed due to the conditions. They were also shut on Friday.

Cumbria Police has also warned drivers that the passes are now closed.

In a warning to drivers following the incident on Saturday, the force said: “Snow is forecasted across the county from late this evening, overnight and into Sunday.

“If you must travel during this time do so with caution – pack your car with essentials, plan your route and listen to travel updates.

“Please take care on the roads, especially on more rural routes.”
