Israel has rejected Turkey’s president Tayyip Erdogan’s comment that Hamas is “not a terrorist organisation”.

Mr Erdogan made the remark earlier today in a speech to his party’s lawmakers in parliament, saying Hamas was a liberation group waging a battle to protect its land.

“Israel wholeheartedly rejects the Turkish president’s harsh words about the terrorist organisation Hamas,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lior Haiat said.

“Even the Turkish president’s attempt to defend the terrorist organisation and his inciting words will not change the horrors that the whole world has seen,” he added.
