If you’re just joining us this evening, here’s a brief summary of the key events from the Israel-Hamas war so far today:

  • Israel rescued two hostages from Rafah in southern Gaza overnight during a special operation which saw troops storm the apartment building where they were reportedly being held by Hamas;
  • Fernando Simon Marman, 60, and Louis Har, 70, were said to be “frail” and “pale” after being freed but in overall good condition;
  • Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would “not miss any opportunity” to rescue captives from Gaza as he welcomed the two men home;
  • The Israeli rescue operation was backed up by airstrikes which pounded the small, crowded city as people slept;
  • The Hamas-run health ministry said at least 67 Palestinians have been killed in the Rafah strikes, with the number likely to rise;
  • UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron said he was “very concerned” about the situation in Rafah and urged Israel to “stop and think very seriously” about taking further action;
  • Japan also said it was “deeply concerned” about Israel’s military action in Rafah.
