Iran executes man arrested during 2022 protests – with rights group accusing Tehran of ‘torture’

Iran has executed ‌a man convicted of involvement in ‌the killing of a security officer during nationwide protests in 2022, the judiciary’s news outlet Mizan reports.

The defendant, identified as Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, was described as one of the main individuals responsible for the death ‌of Abbas Fatemiyeh.

Rights group HRANA said Abdollahzadeh was subject to torture to extract forced confessions.

The protests themselves were sparked by the death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, in police custody.

Here are the key developments:

  • Negotiations on the rocks: Peace talks remain in limbo after Donald Trump said yesterday he’s “not satisfied” with Iran’s latest proposal in negotiations and said Iran had “not paid a big enough price”. The proposal included postponing talks on nuclear energy, a senior Iranian official said. Senator Lindsey Graham, a leading Trump ally, urged the president to “finish the job” and resume attacks if Iran continues to play hardball.
  • Trump clashes with allies over war: Donald Trump vowed to withdraw even more troops from Germany than the 5,000 already announced. NATO and Germany’s defence minister downplayed the withdrawal. The Pentagon had announced the step after Trump clashed with the German chancellor. The president warned Italy and Spain could be affected next.
  • US seeking help from allies: At the same time, the US is looking for allies to join a potential international coalition ensuring the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz;
  • Bombing in Lebanon: Israel has continued to carry out strikes across southern Lebanon, despite a ceasefire apparently being in place. An Israeli security cabinet meeting on the ceasefire is set to take place today.
  • Fears for Nobel Peace Prize winner: The family of imprisoned Iranian human rights lawyer Narges Mohammadi and her foundation have raised the alarm over her health. The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner needs urgent treatment in Tehran after being hospitalised, they said, with the Nobel body also calling for her release.
