Houthis attacked ship bound for Iran, authorities say
We’ve more detail to bring you news on the claim by Yemen’s Houthis this morning that they attacked a “US-flagged ship” in the Red Sea.
Authorities said the Star Iris – a Marshall Islands-flagged, Greek-operated carrier – was targeted while bound for a port in Iran – the group’s main supporter.
The vessel was attacked by two missiles and there was minor damage, though no one was reported hurt, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO).
The Houthis earlier described the vessel as a US-flagged ship without offering evidence.
UKMTO said the attack happened as Star Iris was travelling south through the Bab el Mandeb Strait. It was en route from Brazil to Bandar Khomeini in Iran.
