A new wave of Guinean filmmakers is trying to revive the country’s ailing film industry after years of falling output, scarce funding and shuttered cinemas.
Guinean cinema was once a thriving sector, but regular screening venues are now few. In Conakry, the Franco-Guinean Cultural Centre stands as the capital’s only consistent place to watch films. To counter the decline, training programs are equipping aspiring filmmakers with skills in screenwriting, directing, editing and sound production, while creative incubators support project development and production.
Industry players caution, however, that training alone will not guarantee a comeback. They argue that sustainable financing, dependable production structures and stronger distribution networks are needed to keep emerging talent in the sector and get local films in front of audiences.
