G7 warns of new Iran sanctions and urges de-escalation

G7 foreign ministers have warned of fresh sanctions against Iran over its drone and missile attack on Israel, and urged both countries to avoid escalating the conflict.

The group has been meeting in Capri today, with Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said the summit’s agenda was changed on Friday to address the latest developments in the Middle East.

“In light of reports of strikes on April 19, we urge all parties to work to prevent further escalation. The G7 will continue to work to this end,” said a group statement.

Earlier, Iran fired air defences at a major air base and a nuclear site near the central city of Isfahan after spotting drones.

They were suspected to be part of an Israeli attack in retaliation for Tehran’s unprecedented assault on the country last weekend.

Mr Tajani did not immediately address the incident, but said that G7 ministers condemned Iran’s attack on Israel and urged both sides to exercise restraint.

“The political objective is de-escalation,” he said.
