G7 ‘condemns unprecedented Iranian attack’, says Blinken

Antony Blinken says the G7 has “condemned the unprecedented Iranian attack” on Israel during its three-day meeting of foreign ministers.

The US secretary of state says the attack on 1 April was unprecedented in “scope and scale” due to it being a direct attack by Iran and involved more than 300 munitions.

“We are committed to Israel’s security. We are also committed to de-escalating, to trying to bring this tension to a close,” he adds.

He explains the G7 will also focus on “bringing Iran to account” for its “destabilising activities”.

While he says the group has been dealing with the conflict in the Middle East, he adds that Gaza remains a focus and Israel has been urged to rapidly implement more aid.

“We also focused on the imperative of getting a ceasefire,” he says.
