Evacuation orders have been lifted for some people in the West Hills area of Los Angeles after the Kenneth Fire reached 35% containment, the county sheriffs department has said.
It said the blaze had burned through 1,000 acres.
The fast-moving Kenneth Fire started late yesterday afternoon in the San Fernando Valley just two miles (3.2km) from a school serving as a shelter for fire evacuees.
Five fires still burning in California
It’s almost 11.30pm in California, and five fires continue to burn.
Some have been controlled by firefighters more than others – this is measured in the percentage of the blaze that has been “contained”.
Here’s how big they are and how “contained” – meaning to what degree the fire department has them under control.
- Palisades fire: At least 19,978 acres, 6% contained
- Eaton fire: At least 13,690 acres, 0% contained
- Hurst fire: At least 771 acres, 37% contained
- Lidia fire: At least 394 acres, 75% contained
- Kenneth fire: At least 960 acres, 0% contained
These figures are provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire.
To put these numbers into some perspective, 17,000 acres – or 69km sq – is roughly the size of the city of Wolverhampton, according to the Office for National Statistics.
