Overview

Northern Illinois University (NIU), a student-centered, nationally recognized public research university located 65 miles west of Chicago, invites applications for the position of dean of the College of Education. NIU seeks an accomplished, visionary and collaborative academic leader to advance NIU’s strong culture of teaching, research, service and innovation.

The NIU College of Education serves the greater Chicago region and beyond including strong international partnerships with the Educate and Engage Global program. Position Summary

Reporting to the provost, the dean is the intellectual and administrative leader of the college. The dean is the chief advocate for the mission and purpose of education, both internally and within the state of Illinois, helping define it in a manner that sets NIU apart from other institutions in the state and region.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Culture

  1. Provide visionary leadership of the academic, programmatic, administrative and fiscal endeavors of the College of Education in collaboration with our highly engaged and experienced senate leadership team, comprised of two associate deans, six department chairs and four directors.
  2. Create an environment where all are appreciated for their individuality, respected for their diverse points of view, connected with colleagues and supported by allies.

Budget

  1. Manage the college’s budget and resources effectively, transparently and collaboratively.
  2. Align resources to support and advance the college’s strategic priorities.

Innovation

  1. Implement bold and positive initiatives in partnership with the president, the provost, a collegial group of deans and vice presidents, and the College of Education leadership team.

Partnerships

  1. Develop reciprocal relationships with educational institutions, community organizations, agencies and businesses to support the priorities of the college and university.

Revenue Generation

  1. Lead revenue generation for the college, which includes revenue-generating partnerships, programs, camps, grants and contracts, as well as fundraising and development efforts in partnership with the NIU Foundation and alumni councils.

Supervision

  1. Supervise college leadership, including associate deans, department chairs, directors of units and the dean’s office staff.

Collaboration

  1. Foster collaboration with the faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders to advance the college’s strategic action planning framework, working within the institution-wide planning, budgeting and evaluation processes.

  1. Develop, fosters and maintains positive and productive relationships with key college stakeholders within and external to the university.

Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)

  • An earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree.
  • Faculty credentials that demonstrate teaching experience and research, scholarship and/or creative achievement consistent with appointment to the NIU faculty at the rank of tenured full professor.
  • Progressive administrative experience in higher education and demonstrated visionary leadership skills.
  • Experience with budget and financial management processes, strategic planning, policy formation and personnel management.

Preferred Qualifications (SPS)

  • Experience working with collective bargaining units, and an understanding of labor and management roles and responsibilities at an institution of higher education.
  • Experience working with P-12 schools, knowledge of Council of Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and all other accrediting standards pertinent to the college, and an ability to interpret and implement applicable standards of accrediting bodies.
  • Experience providing leadership in legislative or other state or federal policy action committees pertaining to educator licensure programs.
  • Experience in national teacher preparation organizations and teacher education research.
  • Experience with proving competency to support and maintain productive relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience addressing challenges of student enrollment and retention while maintaining high academic standards.
  • A record of support and understanding of innovation within the context of a college of education.
  • Experience displaying appreciation for the importance of access, affordability, accountability and regional engagement to the mission of a nationally recognized, regionally relevant, public research university.
  • Experience with demonstrating a capacity to promote and build academic excellence in teaching and research.
  • Experience displaying appreciation for the value and importance of a well-rounded education that promotes integration of learning and develops the critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills essential for success at work, citizenship and life.
