China’s Manufacturing Growth Slows in July
China’s manufacturing sector expanded at its slowest pace in four months during July, according to a private-sector purchasing managers’ survey released today.
The survey showed that the manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell to 50.9 in July from 51.7 in June. Although a reading above 50 still indicates expansion, economists noted that factory output and new orders grew more slowly amid weaker domestic demand and continued uncertainty in global trade.
Analysts said export orders returned to modest growth after two months of contraction, while manufacturers continued hiring workers at the fastest pace in nearly three years. Business confidence remained generally positive despite persistent concerns over production costs and the broader economic outlook.
China Expands Financial Cooperation with Hong Kong
China’s top securities regulator announced new measures aimed at strengthening financial links with Hong Kong.
The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said it will support the introduction of additional exchange-traded funds (ETFs) linked to mainland Chinese assets and encourage the development of more yuan-denominated futures products in Hong Kong.
Officials also said they are reviewing proposals to expand mutual professional recognition for futures industry practitioners between the mainland and Hong Kong. The initiatives are intended to deepen integration between the two financial markets and enhance Hong Kong’s role as an international offshore renminbi hub.
Flood Relief Supplies Sent to Northeastern Provinces
Chinese authorities have allocated additional central disaster-relief supplies to the northeastern provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang following severe flooding.
The emergency assistance includes tents, folding beds, blankets and other essential materials for residents affected by heavy rainfall. Emergency management agencies continue to coordinate relief operations as local authorities assess damage and provide support to displaced communities.
China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week Opens
The 2026 China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week has opened in Guiyang, bringing together education officials, university leaders and researchers from China and Southeast Asia.
Organisers unveiled new initiatives designed to expand academic exchanges, research partnerships, vocational education and student mobility among participating countries. The annual event is expected to strengthen educational cooperation and regional ties across ASEAN member states and China.
Domestic Flight Fuel Surcharges to Fall
Chinese authorities confirmed that domestic airline fuel surcharges will be reduced beginning 5 August.
The move follows lower aviation fuel prices and is expected to reduce travel costs during the peak summer holiday season. Airlines and tourism operators anticipate that the lower surcharges will encourage additional domestic travel in the coming weeks.
High Temperatures Continue to Affect Agriculture
Several regions across China continue to experience intense summer heat, with high temperatures affecting agricultural production.
Local authorities and farmers are implementing irrigation measures and other protective strategies to minimise crop losses and maintain food production as the prolonged heatwave continues. Officials are closely monitoring weather conditions and providing technical support to farming communities.
