Casemiro has called on his Real Madrid teammates to wake up from their slumber, work harder and play better to steer back to their winning ways.
The Brazil international footballer expressed shock after Los Blancos lost 2-1 to Liga underdogs Girona on Sunday.
Zinedine Zidane and his midfielder Isco blamed their failure on loss of concentration, but Casemiro says Madrid must buckle down and show better attitude.
The defeat at Estadi Montilivi leaves Madrid eight points behind Barcelona.
‘We need to do more than that,’ said Casemiro in a post-match interview. ‘We have to work harder and play better.
‘We also need to remain focused in the face of this unexpected humiliation. The game was lost because we didn’t play well – we failed to create enough goal-scoring chances to win the match.’
The former Porto and Sao Paulo player continued, ‘There are no excuses on this – it’s clear that we didn’t open up spaces as we usually do. Girona should be congratulated for the achievement. They deserved it.’
Responding to a question about the 8-point gap between Madrid and Barcelona, he said there’s still time to upturn the league table, but stressed that it can be achieved only through hard work.
‘The league table? The gap between us and our rivals is a concern but we must stay focused as we will still have chances to win this league,’ Casemiro said
Madrid will play their Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League match against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium.
