California’s governor has invited Donald Trump to California amid the president-elect’s vocal criticism of his leadership.
Mr Trump has referred to Gavin Newsom as “Gavin Newscum” and on Wednesday blamed him for reported water supply issues.
But Mr Newsom has now extended an invitation – shared on social media – to the incoming president.
“As you prepare to assume the presidency once more, I invite you to come to California,” he says in a post alongside his letter.
“The hundreds of thousands of Americans – displaced from their homes and fearful for the future – deserve to see us all working together in their best interests, not politicising a human tragedy and spreading disinformation from the sidelines.”
As one wind warning ends, another looms – as fire chief expects ocean gusts
Firefighters are still battling windy conditions and it could get worse, a California fire chief has just told reporters.
David Acuna told Sky News presenter Barbara Serra strong winds from the north and east are slowing down, but they are expected to pick up from the west.
In the past couple of hours, LA’s fire chief Anthony Marrone said the current red flag warning – which means stronger winds and other factors are expected to increase the risk of fire – will expire at 6pm local time today (2am UK time tomorrow).
But a new warning is expected on Monday – and that’s making Mr Acuna “cautious”.
“We are continuing to deal with the battling winds,” he said.
“The strong winds from the north and the east are slowing down, but now we’ve got winds potentially coming in from the ocean and we’re also predicting another red flag warning here, beginning either late in the weekend or early next week.”
One of the priorities, he said, is to make sure the fire cannot escape control lines.
“Right now, we just can’t say that with any confidence, because the winds continue to battle back and forth,” he said.
“And with the amount of fuel that’s out there on the ground, which does include the houses that burned, we are being very cautious with that.”
