Biden can’t think without teleprompter, says Republican strategist

Joe Biden performed better in his rally speech as he had a teleprompter – but he “shows who he really is” when he has to think on his feet, a Republican media strategist has said.

Providing some initial reaction to the event in North Carolina on our special edition of The World with Yalda Hakim, Brett O’Donnell said last night was an “utter disaster” for the US president.

“When the phone call comes at 3am with a world crisis, there’s no teleprompter that tells you what to do. You have to make a decision as commander-in-chief, and you have to be ready,” he said.

He suggested Mr Biden’s performance last night made the public “nervous”.

Mr O’Donnell said the Biden team should have made sure the president was strong on the “performative aspects” of the debate, rather than “filling his head with a bunch of facts and a bunch of lines”.

He said Mr Biden needed a strong performance in the first 30 minutes, when “debates are won or lost”.

“He looked rambling. He was incoherent, he had no message and he wasn’t on offence. All of those things, coupled with the fact that he just looked old and sounded old, created a disaster and he could never recover,” Mr O’Donnell added.
