‘I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to’
The US president appears to reference his age and – as was perhaps unavoidable – his shaky performance at last night’s debate, as he continues his speech to supporters in North Carolina.
“Folks, I don’t walk as easy as I used to, I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to,” he says.
“But I know what I do know. I know how to tell the truth, I know right from wrong.”
Joe Biden says he knows how to “do this job” and “get things done”.
And he appears to signal he will not drop out of the presidential race – as many have suggested he should – saying he “knows what’s at stake”.
“I know, like millions of Americans know, when you get knocked down you get back up,” he says, to huge cheers from the crowd.
Trump a ‘genuine threat’ to US, Biden says
Joe Biden calls Donald Trump a “genuine threat” to the US.
He says he still believes America is a country of “honesty and decency” and is the “beacon of the world”.
“Donald Trump is motivated by revenge and retribution, well revenge and retribution never built a damn thing,” he says.
“You and I… we are a nation of hope and possibilities.”
Mr Biden says the election choice is “simple”, adding that Trump will “destroy democracy” and he will “defend it”.
As he wraps up his speech, the president says: “Let’s go get ’em North Carolina.”
