300 people’ arrested after protest near US Capitol

“Upwards of approximately 300 people” have been arrested after a rally on Capitol Hill in the US, according to police.

Images from Washington DC showed protesters, many of who were from the group Jewish Voice for Peace, filling the Cannon House Office Building.

They were chanting “the world is watching” and some wearing T-shirts that read “Jews say ceasefire now”, pushing for the government to act on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Another group of protesters blocked Independence Avenue outside the building.

A spokesperson said the police department do not yet have a final tally on the number of arrests, adding that the number could change by morning.
