Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, a Nigerian economist and politician was officially unveiled as the running mate of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 general election on Friday, July 8, 2022.

Here are some things to know about Datti Baba-Ahmed.

  1. Baba-Ahmed was born on July 7 1969 in Zaria to a large family comprising 33 children.

2. His father was an Arab cattle trader from modern-day Mauritania who later became a well-known professor and expert on Islamic jurisprudence.

3. He had his secondary school education at Airforce Military School, Jos, Plateau state, and then proceeded to the University of Maiduguri in Borno state where he obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics.

4. He went ahead to secure an MBA from the University of Wales, Cardiff.

5. He has worked in different capacities including as project coordinator at Baze Research and Data Services Ltd. as well as officer II in the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company, Lagos.

6. He also worked as a banking officer with First Bank of Nigeria Plc from July 1997 to December 1998.

7. He later became the managing director of Baze Research and Data Services Ltd from July 1999 to January 2003, before venturing into politics.

8. Baba-Ahmed was elected as House of Representatives member for Zaria Federal Constituency on the platform of All Nigeria People’s Party in 2003.

9. He was among the lawmakers who opposed allowing President Obasanjo to run for a third term.

10. He received the title of Doctor of Philosophy in 2006, while still a Federal Representative, after completing his Ph.D. studies at the University of Westminster.

11. Well-known for his anti-corruption stance, he took the Independent National Electoral Commission to court in 2007 over the conduct of previous elections.

12. In the April 2011 elections, Baba-Ahmed polled 366,398 votes in the contest for Senator and won the senator seat for Kaduna North.

13. In 2011, he established Baze University, a private tertiary institution located in Abuja.
