The man who died after being mauled by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has been identified as William Chapman, believed to be in his early twenties .
Chapman appears to have filmed himself approaching the tiger in the moments before the attack, according to footage posted on his personal social media . The video shows him walking towards the animal, which was lying on a wooden platform a few metres away . Heavy breathing can be heard as distant voices shout “Oh my God” and “Seriously” .
South Yorkshire Police confirmed he had been visiting the park alone on Saturday . Eyewitnesses said people frantically told Chapman to “play dead,” but he appeared not to understand, and was heard telling the tiger to “stop being naughty” .
One witness, Anthony Hunt, said a woman desperately tried to pull Chapman back before he jumped into the enclosure, but he “overpowered her” . Other witnesses described him as “dancing with his AirPods in” earlier that day and asking strangers to take photos of him with the tiger in the background .
The park was evacuated following the incident shortly after 1:30pm on Saturday, October 10, and remained closed for a fourth consecutive day on Tuesday . Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed the tiger, named Altai, is “safe and well” and will not be euthanised .
City of Doncaster Council has launched a health and safety investigation into the incident . Police have urged the public not to share “distressing” footage of the attack circulating online .
