Worst to come later today, experts say
As wildfires rage across thousands of kilometres in California, experts are warning that the worst is yet to come.
The National Weather Service said winds should gradually weaken throughout the day but the worst conditions were expected in the morning LA time (later this afternoon in the UK).
“Dangerous fire weather conditions are ongoing in southern California with the most extreme conditions expected this morning,” it said.
Critical fire weather conditions are expected to persist well into tomorrow, the weather service added.
The sentiment was shared by the mayor of LA…
How big are the fires?
As we’ve been reporting, there are three main fires thousands of acres in size devastating Los Angeles.
Officials say the fire in the southern suburb of Pacific Palisades, which started mid-morning local time yesterday, rapidly spread from 10 acres to an area covering nearly 3,000 acres.
It’s the biggest so far.
The Eaton fire, raging near Altadena, is around 500 acres in size.
The Hurst fire, near Sylmar, has grown to cover 1,000 acres.
All of the fires have been 0% contained.

If you’re wondering about the names of the fires, the LAFD designates them after nearby landmarks, or occasionally, the name of the first responder on the scene.
For example, the Eaton fire is presumably named after the Eaton Canyon Falls Trail.
