SINGAPORE — Winning a reality dating show doesn’t guarantee a happy ending. Just ask Frayya and LA, the triumphant couple from Mediacorp’s Wingman, who have gone their separate ways months after collecting the S$20,000 (US$15,660) grand prize.
The Thai actress, 23, and the Filipino model-actor, 33, kept their romance going after cameras stopped rolling in March, but the relationship fizzled out shortly after.
In an interview with 8days.sg, LA confirmed the breakup was a mutual decision. He admitted that moving on took time but expressed no regrets: “I think things happen for a reason, and I’m thankful it ended the way it did and when it did.”
Why the Wingman Winners Split
According to LA, the pair struggled to transition from the show’s bubble to their everyday lives.
“Though being at the show did help us imagine an ideal future in long distance dating, being in the ‘reality’ of the real world differs from that of the show,” he explained. “Different settings, distance, and environment do affect one’s emotional state and feelings.”
Their demanding careers added to the strain. There were stretches when the couple could only connect late at night—or not until the next day.
Even so, LA remains optimistic about long-distance romance in general, saying it can succeed “as long as both parties are committed and ready.”
A Romance That Seemed Built to Last
The split may surprise fans who watched the couple fall for each other on screen. LA frequently referred to Frayya as his “home” during the show, and the pair appeared deeply attached.
After filming wrapped, LA—who lives in Manila—planned monthly trips to see Frayya in Bangkok. He met her family and even tagged along on a family outing. While apart, he downloaded a popular Thai messaging app to stay in touch and sent regular deliveries of cakes, snacks, flowers, and her favourite iced matcha to her workplace or home.
Despite those efforts, geography and their jam-packed calendars proved too much to overcome.
What’s Next for LA
LA revealed that he and Frayya are no longer in contact, though he holds no ill will. “I think we will always hold a special place in each other’s lives no matter what happens. We did go through something together so the bond will definitely still be there.”
Romance is on the back burner for now as he concentrates on acting. “If the moment comes, it would be great to build a genuine connection with someone,” he said. “‘Til then, I’ll be in my little corner working and building.”
