Why Russia is attacking power stations in Ukraine

Analysis: Why is Russia attacking Ukraine’s power stations?

We reported earlier that Russia fired four missiles and 12 Shahed drones into eastern Ukraine overnight.

Ukraine’s air forces said nine of the drones were shot down in four regions.

Looking at the latest strike, military analyst Sean Bell noted only 24 hours earlier Ukraine saw 58 drone attacks and said the wave upon wave attacks were “not giving Ukraine a chance to recover”.

“The challenge is trying to work out why they are doing it,” he said.

“Traditionally, the Russians have done this over the winter to put the energy out but it’s unusual to do it in the spring.”

Bell said there were likely two main aims for Russia here.

He said: “One of which is to soak up Ukrainian air defence missiles to gradually sap away at the diminishing supplies.

“Also, Ukraine has spoken about their industry developing its own weapons and it might well be that Russia is specifically targeting energy to stop those factories delivering weapons.

“So it is combating Ukraine’s industrialisation of its industry.”
