Europe in a ‘pre-war era’, Tusk warns; Pictures from Berlin protests

Europe is currently in a “pre-war” era, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said.

In an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt, Mr Tusk said the continent needed to step up defence investment, adding that Europe was in a situation “not seen since 1945”.

He said: “I know it sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun: the pre-war era.

“I’m not exaggerating – it’s becoming clearer every day.”

Mr Tusk went on to say “war is no longer a concept from the past”.

“The most worrying thing at the moment is that literally any scenario is possible. We haven’t seen a situation like this since 1945,” he added.

People in Berlin have been taking part in an alternative Easter march organised by the Ukraine alliance Vitsche.

The demonstration aims to show solidarity with the victims of the war.

On their website, Vitsche states it “amplifies Ukrainian voices” and “stands for the freedom and development of Ukraine”.
