Why Antonella Roccuzzo fell in Love with Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi’s wedding to childhood friend Antonella Roccuzzo is arguably, the “wedding of the century.”

Rosario, hometown and place of birth to the Barcelona player, played host to over 250 guests who attended the historical celebration of love.

Although Messi and Antonella knew each other as kids, media reports confirm the lovebirds found their missing spark after a tragic event occurred in her life.

Messi was back in his countryside Rosario some years back when Antonella lost one of her closest friends. He provided the needed comfort and was a shoulder for her to lean on.

They became soulmates soon after the heartbreaking incident.

Their relationship started when the 5-time Ballon d’Or was nine years old, and she was eight.

However, the romance slowed down after Messi signed for Spanish club side Barcelona and moved to Spain for what has since become an amazing career.

Prior to their wedding, Antonella was shuttling between Rosario and Barcelona to close the gap in their relationship. Their love waxed stronger despite the challenges posed by distance until her recent relocation for a permanent stay in Spain.

The couple’s close friends, football fans, former and present Barca teammates honored their invitation despite criticisms from famous footballers such as Diego Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo who were noticeably absent.

Here are a few pictures from the memorable event:
