The White House has welcomed Hungary’s decision to ratify Sweden’s bid to join NATO.
“We would like to welcome Sweden alongside Finland into the NATO alliance very, very soon,” spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said tonight.
She went on to urge the Hungarian government to quickly complete the process to allow Sweden’s entry into NATO.
Earlier today, Hungary’s parliament ratified Sweden’s bid, clearing the last major obstacle to membership.
Sweden avoided military alliances for more than 200 years and had long ruled out joining NATO – until Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
It then launched a joint bid with neighbouring Finland, but Turkey and Hungary initially objected – despite all other NATO members voting to support the move.
